Teens are not reading less because they are lazy.
They are learning differently.
They want to try, test, and experience things for themselves. Reading, as it is often presented, asks them to sit still, concentrate, and absorb. In a world built on interaction, that is a tough sell.
So reading gets pushed aside.
But when reading disappears, we lose more than books. We lose focus. We lose empathy. We lose confidence in communication. We lose the ability to think deeply and explain ideas clearly.
This is not just about literacy. It is about how children develop the skills they need for life.
At Space Ranger Fred, this is exactly what we are trying to address. Stories should not sit on their own. They should spark curiosity, lead to action, and help children think, try, achieve and explain. That is where real learning happens.
I have written a full article exploring why this is happening and what we can do to turn it around.
